Matakauri Lodge – Owner’s Cottage
Client: Robertson Family
Dates: January 2013 – December 2013
Project Location: Queenstown
Frequency Role: Project Manager
Matakauri Lodge is a magnificent 6 star luxury lodge situated in Queenstown on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Frequency were engaged to project manage the construction of a new Owner’s Cottage to satisfy the growing demand for the lodge. Frequency worked alongside one of New Zealand’s top Interior Designers, Virginia Fisher, Architects Sumich Chaplin and Brosnan Construction to deliver a multiple suite luxury residence with an accelerated construction programme of 7.5 months to ensure the lodge was completed in time for the peak summer season.
Construction began in April 2013 and involved working through a Queenstown winter. To minimise programme delays to the project a giant scaffold structure was placed over the entire building and lined with shrink wrap. This allowed works to continue without delays through the harsh winter conditions. The building was completed and handed over in early December, a week earlier than the contract handover.
The Owner’s Cottage has a building area of 430m2 which consisted of four luxury suites each with their own balcony, a communal living room, kitchen, study and laundry. This project also involved upgrading the lodge’s existing wastewater treatment plant and access driveway into the site along with enhanced landscaping to comply with resource consent conditions.
The existing lodge provides a high value customer experience and it was essential that it remained open during construction and with minimal disruption. This required innovative construction methodologies, excellent communication with the lodge staff to allow appropriate operational management ensuring guests were not affected by construction nuisance.
