Auckland Integrated Fare System

Sector: Rail

Client: Auckland Transport

Dates: 2011 – 2013

Project Location: Auckland

Frequency Role: Project Manager

This project saw the design, placement and commissioning of an automated integrated fare system that can be used on multiple modes of Auckland’s public transport system in Britomart Station. Frequency were the Project Managers for the design, consenting and installation of electronic ticketing gate lines, ticket kiosks and signage at Britomart stations’ western and eastern entrances, along with Newmarket, Manukau and New Lynn train stations and the Downtown Ferry terminal.

Frequency managed this project from concept through to completion, incorporating all aspects of multiple gate design, passenger flow modelling, gate layout, ensuring compliance with fire and egress requirements as well as the integration of the electrical, data, communications and security services into the stations’ and Auckland Transport systems. The gates were then successfully integrated into the sophisticated existing fire safety management (Fire panel and SCADA) system.

The project was a challenging assignment deep in some of New Zealand’s busiest railway stations with multiple stakeholders and rigid timeframes. The delivery works required careful planning allowing seamless commissioning and a high profile launch.

Key Challenges:

  • Stakeholder management and communications.
  • Complex electrical, data and communications design across multiple organisations.
  • Fixed deadlines.
