Sustainable Coastlines “The Flagship” Education Hub

Sector: Environment & Sustainability

Client: Sustainable Coastlines

Dates: October 2015 – February 2016

Project Location: Wynyard Quarter, Auckland

Frequency Role: Project Management, Design Management & Integrative Project Delivery

Frequency is very proud to support Sustainable Coastlines and be part of this exciting and innovative project, which will be an educational flagship for sustainable construction and sustainable living in the heart of Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter.

Sustainable Coastlines’ “The Flagship Education Hub” is a pop-up style facility in the Wynyard Quarter, designed to stringent sustainable construction principles. The new events, education and training space will help Sustainable Coastlines on its mission to inspire and enable others to look after the places we love, while bringing a wide range of sustainability-focused activities to the area.

“Enabling people to look after the coastlines and waterways they love.”

“Sustainable Coastlines is a young, multi-award winning New Zealand charity run by a small team of hard-working staff and a network of passionate volunteers. Our mission is to inspire, educate and enable others to look after the places we love.

We love our coasts and we work with our sleeves rolled up to keep them beautiful. We coordinate and support large-scale coastal clean-up events, educational programs, public awareness campaigns and riparian planting projects. We also help groups run their own events. Through these efforts we motivate volunteers and communities around Aotearoa and the Pacific to look after the beaches and rivers we love.”

The education hub invites the public to explore the challenges faced by our coastlines and waterways in a unique and beautiful space. Engaging, family-friendly displays allow visitors to explore and learn about marine litter and freshwater quality through cutting-edge interactive technologies and multimedia content, and a workshop space will host upcycling activities, artist collaboration projects and training sessions to help advance the charity’s cause.

Stage 1 is now operational, consisting of the repurposed Samsung Electronics’ exhibition ‘Smart Home’, which they have donated to Sustainable Coastlines and converted into this innovative education space.

Stage 2, a larger and more ambitious extension of the facility, is currently progressing through detailed design and is targeted to be completed by the end of 2016.

With a strong focus on environmental education and hands-on learning, the building itself will be a highly sustainable building.

Built utilising predominantly upcycled materials, the design team are working through an Integrative Design Process with an aim of achieving net-positive water, net-positive energy and meeting the Living Building Challenge design standards.

The primary structure for Stage 2 consists of repurposed shipping containers, which have been refurbished in the Paremoremo Prison workshops, thus providing vocational skills training for prisoners as well as a fantastic product that will be used for education of the public into the importance of clean waterways and coastlines.

The landscape design will incorporate coastal planting in a beautiful and interactive courtyard setting, to highlight the importance of preserving our natural spaces and the importance of bringing nature into our urban environments.

The exciting landmark project is made possible by the vision of Sustainable Coastlines, a dedicated design team and the key stakeholders, including landowner Panuku Development Auckland, whose support in making the site available and collaboration on the project has been significant.
