Our intern programme offers undergraduates who are seeking a career in the construction industry, the opportunity to experience first hand, life as a project manager. We offer students paid placements across our offices throughout the year.
We chatted to Lilly, our Wellington intern on her experience and thoughts of her time at Frequency so far.
What are you currently studying?
I am currently undertaking a bachelor’s degree of Building Science at Victoria University, where I am double majoring in Project Management and Sustainable Engineering Systems.
Why did you apply for the paid internship with Frequency and what were you hoping to gain?
I was super eager to gain professional work experience and begin building my connections within the industry. I approached the internship with an open mind, without any specific expectations, purely to kickstart my career in project management.
What is the most interesting thing you have learnt during your time at Frequency, and any new skills, techniques, or knowledge?
One of the most valuable experiences has been sitting in on professional construction meetings with varying types of contractors and consultants. Observing how industry professionals communicate and collaborate has been an invaluable learning opportunity that goes beyond what university can offer.
Has there been any surprises during your experience?
The team culture in the Wellington office has been one of the most comforting aspects of my time at Frequency. It’s been refreshing to see how the team maintains a high-quality work environment while also fostering humorous and supportive friendships.
Would you recommend this internship to other students? Why or why not?
Yes, I would definitely recommend this internship. From my experience, it has been the ideal gateway that has offered great exposure to all the different aspects of consultant project management.
How has this internship helped you for your future studies and career?
I have gained a lot more confidence in applying the knowledge I’ve gained through university to real-world scenarios. It has also expanded my ability to network and communicate more effectively in a professional setting.
What is your advice for future Frequency interns?
I think its really important to expose yourself to as many career pathways as possible, always say yes to new opportunities, and don’t hesitate to ask questions – even if you feel silly.
