Frequency Sessions: Insights from Our Christchurch Panel Event

“Overcoming challenges and stimulating growth in Christchurch and Canterbury’s construction sector”

Last week, we proudly hosted our first Frequency Sessions panel event in Ōtautahi Christchurch, creating a space for industry professionals to connect, share knowledge, and discuss the challenges shaping our sector. With a diverse lineup of expert panellists, the event sparked valuable conversations on governance, infrastructure planning, and policy impacts.

Key Insights from Our Panellists

Guided by our expert facilitator Tom Williams, each panellist provided unique perspectives on some of the most pressing topics in the industry.

Reflections on the Christchurch Rebuild

Graham Darlow and Laurie Saegers examined the lessons learned from Christchurch’s rebuild, emphasising the need for agility in governance and supply chains. They highlighted how effective collaboration, streamlined decision-making, and proactive risk management are essential to building resilience in post-disaster reconstruction efforts.

Managing Growth in Selwyn

With Selwyn District experiencing rapid expansion, Murray Harrington explored the challenges and opportunities of long-term urban and infrastructure planning. He underscored the importance of early-stage investment, strategic land use, and balancing growth with environmental sustainability.

The Future of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs)

Graham Darlow delved into the effectiveness of PPPs in delivering complex infrastructure projects. His discussion focused on what makes a PPP successful—clear governance structures, risk-sharing mechanisms, and alignment of public and private sector goals—while also addressing common challenges that can hinder their success.

Fast Track Approvals: Are They Working?

Dr. Sina Cotter Tait provided an in-depth analysis of the Fast Track Approval Act, questioning its effectiveness in expediting infrastructure projects while maintaining robust regulatory oversight. The discussion considered whether the act is striking the right balance between efficiency and due diligence, with insights into potential areas for improvement.

Looking Ahead

The inaugural Frequency Sessions event reinforced the value of open dialogue in shaping the future of New Zealand’s infrastructure landscape. Thought-provoking discussions like these are essential to driving innovation, improving policy, and delivering better project outcomes.

We extend our gratitude to our panellists and attendees for their contributions to a successful event.
